Meditation

The words meditation and medicine both come from the Latin word, medare, to heal.

It was no coincidence, then, that when I began meditating my gradual degeneration from muscular dystrophy slowed down.  I used to force myself to meditate for 15 minutes by setting my phone alarm.  Now I actually look forward to my 15 minutes of quiet in my mind each morning.  I set my phone alarm for 20 minutes so that I stop.  I often meditate in the afternoon as well.

I began meditating after reading The Seeker’s Guide, written by Elizabeth Lesser, several years ago.  I have since found many sites on-line that teach you how to begin and offer lots of meditations for free.   My favorite one  is Fragrant Heart:  http://www.fragrantheart.com/

Another favorite is Deepak Chopra:  http://www.chopra.com/.   Together with Oprah Winfrey, he provides free 21-day meditation challenges which I have done – the healing one last year changed my life.
