Zhuangzi, the Chinese philosopher told the story of a tree which had many bumps and gnarls in its trunk and branches. Because of this, it was considered useless by carpenters and the builders of homes and ships. So it was left standing.
Many years passed and it grew to be very large. To those who came and sat beneath its gnarly branches, it was treasured for the shade and the coolness and comfort it offered.
This story, a lesson on acceptance of what is without judgement, challenged my perception of my life in a wheelchair. Everything has a purpose, every person, and every situation – we just can’t see the big picture. So we have to trust that all will be well.
