What do we really want?

So often we think that material possessions will bring us happiness.  The sports car, the designer clothes and accessories, the beach house.  For me, it was a condo in Florida.

Like many people, sitting on the beach looking out over the ocean is calming to me.  I often took trips to the shore in order to relax, and found myself thinking how nice it would be to have a place to live near a beach.  When I began to meditate and understood the concept of living in the moment, I realized that when I felt the ocean breeze and heard the rhythmic sound of the waves, I forgot about anything that was on my mind.  It was the only time I did not dwell on negative situations from the past or worry about my future.

I never did live near the ocean permanently, and now that I am unable to walk along the water’s edge, my dream of doing so has lost its allure.  If I really wanted to live there, wouldn’t I have found a way to make it possible?  Did I really want to live there, or did I just want the carefree feeling that I got while I was there?

This winter has been a long one here on the East coast.  Lots of snow.   After seeing pictures of Facebook friends who went to Florida, I was sad that we could not go.  So I found thisvideo on youtube, and got that calm, relaxed feeling without travelling.

I bookmarked this video to play not only in the winter, but also when I need a reminder to relax and live in the moment.  It’s a lot easier than driving the handi-van 20 hours to Florida or planning a trip to Hawaii!
