“In order to be whole, suspend your criticism.”

“For life is not a matter of taste, but of awakening, not a matter of finding things pleasing or disturbing, but of finding things completing, not a matter of liking or disliking, but of opening the geography of one’s soul.”

These beautiful words of Mark Nepo, in his book, The Book of Awakening, apply to our judgment of others as well as of ourselves.

Is there someone in your life who tends to push your buttons?  Do you dwell on your own past mistakes?  When you find yourself feeling disturbed or upset, focus on your breath. Feel the feelings and try to get as emotional as you can – do not react, take action, or make excuses for yourself or the other to rationalize and bury your feelings.  Count to ten while taking slow, deep breaths.  Let the feelings move through you.  This is the first step in letting go of negative feelings like pain, anger, and anguish.  It is an ongoing process, but it gets easier with each passing year.  Over time, you become less judgmental and more flexible in your thinking, and more open in your heart.
