The Mustard Seed

When I was around 10 years old, I wore a necklace that had a little mustard seed floating in a plastic bubble.  It was a reminder of the verse in the Bible, Matthew 17:20 where Jesus said,  “For I assure you: If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will tell
this mountain, Move from here to there,’ and it will move.”

Being curious by nature, I often tried to command things to happen.  When it did not work, I just knew for sure that it was all my fault for not being good enough and not having the faith I was supposed to have.  It took 40 years of life, with a lot of pain and challenges, before I learned how to do it.   I was raised in the Christian church at a time when many parents and teachers felt they had to scare us with negative messages, like “you are a worm”, “you are unworthy, or “if you ask questions you are a doubting Thomas and headed for hell.”

One of the benefits of being forced into retirement at age 53 due to muscular dystrophy, is that I finally took the time to meditate.  Now, 8 years later, I have learned the lesson of the mustard seed.  I know for sure that when I set my intention. I get what I need on the deepest level.  I can say in all honesty that I am content with my life  – just as it is, wheelchair and all.

Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfrey have made available another free 21-day Meditation Experience, this time on Energy and Attraction.  I am participating to reinforce what I have learned, and to open up even more to the abundance that life has to offer.  Here is the link if you are interested in living life with a sense of fulfillment and inner peace:
